Propellerhead just announced the winners of its 2008 Bassline Battle, and the funk has definitely hit the fan. The celebrity panel of judges, including DJ Babu, Mocean Worker, Mix Master Mike and others, displayed an expert ear and understandable bias toward filthy, gritty and above all funky basslines. You can listen to the winners here.
The requirement of this contest was simple: turn in the best bassline you can make using Propellerhead Reason. Adam Fielding, an English music student took the top spot in both the public and judges panel votes, after Propellerhead received more than 300 bassline submissions. For his Grand Prize, Adam will take home a grip of nice gear from KRK, Novation and Focusrite.
Think you could do better? Well hey, enter next time. This contest was sponsored in part by Remix, and you can always see what other contests we have happening on our contest page.
FiXT Music, Celldweller’s label, is at it again with another freshly launched remix contest. This time you have a chance to remix “Erasus” by Subkulture for the chance to win a stash of prizes that has yet to be announced.
To enter, go to the new FiXT Remix site, where you can download the audio files. You must then upload your finish remix to the site, where the user community will vote on the finalists. The deadline has not been announced, but you should have until the end of summer ‘08.
Also available at the main FiXTonline.com site is a new compilation of Celldweller tracks and remixes available free of charge. The free music comes from an ad-supported widget powered by True Anthem that lets artists generate some cash flow without charging the downloader. The free music comes with ads, in this case for the new video game Haze. You must also register with the FiXT community before downloading the tunes.
Having just released 36 brand new instrumental tracks last month with Ghosts I-IV, Trent Reznor not ready to simply chillax and trade hairstyle secrets with newly returned Nails guitarist Robin Finck while waiting for the Nine Inch Nails tour to start this summer. Instead, The Rez released yet ANOTHER new song last night (with words!). The ultra-catchy track is called “Discipline” and is available for free download here.
On his blog at www.nin.com, The Rez encourages us all to take our shirts off, dance to it, and remix it. HELLS YES. (No word on whether or not you’ll have to remix it while topless.)
And one more thing: Embedded in the free MP3 is a note from The Rez, telling us to visit his site on May 5. Apparently he has even more tricks up his black and depressed sleeve. SWEET.
Hey, do you like free stuff? Better yet, do you like free stuff that’s frigging awesome? Yeah? Well, hold onto your panties because label Ghostly International and programmers Adult Swim have teamed up to present the music and art gem Ghostly Swim. The album contains totally free, totally new and totally high-quality tracks (19 in all) from the likes of Dabrye, FLYamSAM, Matthew Dear, Tycho, Milosh and School of Seven Bells, among others. Also? Ghostly’s mascots, BoyCatBird make their animated debut in a video by Daniel Garcia/Superfi called “City Suckers.”

Beatport.com launched its new hip-hop store, Beatsource.com last month, and it’s celebrating by tossing out some fabulous prizes to a few lucky winners. Personally, I hope I win, but you should enter anyway, just on the highly unlikely chance that I don’t.
All you have to do is register for a Beatsource account by giving them an email address and choosing a user name/password. There is no cost or credit card info required.
The contest ends March 15, so don’t sleep on it! Check out the loot you could win:
‘Free,” the magic words. HipHopMakers.com, a music production blog from 25-year-old Californian Mark V., has just released a collection of 100 downloadable drum sounds. Although it’s only 9 MB of 16-bit/44.1 kHz WAV files, the collection contains enough hot drum and percussion sounds to put beats together fast, including snares, kicks, toms, shakers, cymbals, hats, claps and more. Big ups to Mark for sharing.
Also check out the rest of the site, which is building up its content of production-oriented tips and advice, interviews, reviews and videos.
PreSonus is asking for your help in completing their Recording Musicians Survey. By completing the survey, you get to have input on future PreSonus products and features. Also? Complete the survey and be entered to win a free FaderPort (10 winners will be selected). Sweet.
